Responsible play

Slots are meant to be entertainment you pay for, much like the cinema or bowling. Trouble starts when the game begins to look like a way to earn money or to escape from problems.

Four habits that work

The first and most important: only play with money whose loss would change nothing in your life. Rent money, borrowed money and shared family money do not qualify. The second: fix the amount and the time before you open the game, and write them down if you need to. Decisions made mid-session are worse, and the slot is designed to make you want one more spin.

The third habit is the hardest: do not chase losses. After losing it feels as though the slot “owes” you the money, but it has no memory, and the next hundred spins are no different from the last. Raising the bet to get your money back just means losing faster. And the fourth: do not play when you are tired, upset or have been drinking. In that state the limits you set for yourself stop meaning anything.

How to tell that play is getting out of hand

Addiction rarely looks like a sudden collapse. More often it is a slow slide: the limit is exceeded once, then it happens again, then it becomes routine. Be on your guard if you regularly spend more than you planned, borrow money or sell things in order to play, hide how much you play from people close to you, or notice that play is crowding out sleep, work and study. Another telltale sign shows on days when you cannot play: irritation and anxiety set in. If two or three of these sound familiar, that is reason enough to stop and take stock without waiting for things to get worse.

What to do

Start with technical limits, because they do not depend on your mood. Licensed operators are obliged to give players deposit and time limits, as well as self-exclusion, which blocks the account for a chosen period. All of this is switched on in your account or through support.

Next, tell someone you trust about the situation: keeping it to yourself is harder, and debts and secrets only pile up. And see a psychologist or psychotherapist. Gambling addiction is a recognised disorder, it is treated, and there is no more reason to be ashamed of asking for help here than with any other health problem.

Children and teenagers

Gambling in Uzbekistan is permitted only from the age of 18. If children use your phone or computer, do not save passwords for gambling sites or card details in the browser, and turn on parental controls and purchase confirmation. Demo versions of slots are best kept away from children too: they teach the mechanics long before a child has money of their own.
